Boston Children’s Hospital

Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH), affiliated with Harvard Medical School is one of the largest medical centers and research institutions dedicated to pediatric medicine in North America. As innovators in child health, Boston Children’s improves the health of children by integrating care, research and teaching. Our mission is to provide the best in family-centered, compassionate care, to lead in scientific and clinical advancement, and to train the next generation of leaders in child health. The research enterprise at Boston Children’s Hospital, comprising more than 3,000 researchers, is the world’s largest at a pediatric center. Our work is fueled by a deep understanding of disease coupled with world-class discovery platforms, including genetics and genomics, gene editing, bioinformatics, proteomics, bioengineering, image analysis, multiple animal models, biobanks and disease-specific stem cell lines.

The Congenital Enteropathy Program within the GI Division at Boston Children’s Hospital is the first and only pediatric program in the world dedicated to the clinical care, research and advocacy for infants and children with CODE disorders. The program consists of a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and scientists working together to advance diagnosis, clinical management and develop treatments for CODE disorders.

In collaboration with the other main centers in the PediCoDE consortium, our research labs are actively engaged in all aspects of research within the consortium. We are also actively supported by the resources provided by the NIH P30 funded Harvard Digestive Disease Center.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Monroe Carrell Jr  Children’s Hospital are one of the oldest and largest academic medical centers and research institutions in the United States. Our mission is rooted in a rich history of commitment to excellence in patient care, research,  and education.  World-leading academic departments and comprehensive centers of excellence pursue scientific discoveries and transformational educational and clinical advances across the entire spectrum of health and disease.

The result is an institution which reaches far beyond the walls of our hospital to provide high-quality personalized patient care, to train the next generation of leaders in pediatric medicine, and to advance our knowledge of important conditions that affect vulnerable infants and children through world class collaborative research.

The molecular science researchers at the Epithelial Biology Center and the clinical researchers  and clinicians at the Pediatric GI Division at Monroe Carrell Jr  Children’s Hospital have an ongoing collaboration to understand the mechanisms of disease in children with congenital diarrheal disorders and to advance diagnostic and treatment options for these infants and children.   The Epithelial Biology Center brings together investigators from multiple disciplines to address complex issues related to the physiology and pathophysiology of epithelial cells.

Major areas of investigation include establishment and maintenance of epithelial cell polarity, regulation of vesicle trafficking and cytoskeletal organization, epithelial defense against infectious agents and the identification and characterization of adult epithelial stem cell populations.  As one of the four founding members of the PediCoDE consortium, our labs have  actively pursued the characterization of the cellular pathophysiology of congenital pediatric diarrheal diseases including microvillus inclusion disease and DGAT1 deficiency.

The Epithelial Biology Center also supports the Vanderbilt Digital Histology Shared Resource that is responsible for multiplexed immunofluorescence examination of intestinal biopsies from congenital diarrhea patients under the PediCODE consortium.
